Mop in action

A group of European researchers within the framework of an international project developed an original technology for the removal of oil stains from the sea surface by means of a floating trap resembling a well-known mop.

Existing methods of fighting oil spills, as a rule, are technically very complex and require the attraction of significant forces and resources. The mop for oil cleaning is devoid of such drawbacks.

It is an unsinkable polypropylene network consisting of loops. The material from which the network is made, absorbs oil well and repels water. She does not need special buoys to stay on the surface. The mop is not scary and there is a strong storm, as it easily repeats the contours of the waves, while continuing to do its work.

The mop is designed to work with several types of petroleum products. The retained contaminant volumes are 50 times the weight of the mop. At the end of work, the squeegee is extracted from the water, carefully squeezed and cleaned, and the oil products are merged into a special tanker and sent for recycling or disposal.

The developers hope to bring their product to industrial use within a year.
